Windows 10 for Insiders gains HDR support in Photoshop and Lightroom

Support for HDR in the operating system was made available by Microsoft in the latest Windows 10 update for Insider participants (developers). In this way, image editing programs such as Photoshop and Lightroom will be able to use the full range of colors on monitors that support HDR.

According to the website BleepingComputer, Microsoft is implementing support for HDR and color gamut for imaging applications in a version of Windows 10 released to Insiders (a program that makes the operating system version available to developers). In Microsoft's blog post, the company says that it previously limited applications to using only the sRGB color gamut, but that will now change in the latest OS build.

Amanda Langowski and Brandon LeBlanc of Microsoft say:

"HDR mode changes the behavior of some creative and artistic applications that use International Color Consortium (ICC) display color profiles, such as Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Lightroom Classic, and CorelDraw (among others).

We've added a new feature that allows these apps to get accurate color and access the full gamut of your HDR screen. To enable this feature, close your application, right-click the application icon and click Properties > Compatibility tab, and under Settings select 'Use legacy display ICC color management'. This flag is only effective in HDR mode."

Windows 10 Build 21382 (For Insiders) Brings HDR

In addition to bringing HDR support, Windows 10 Build 21382 also adds several updates and fixes that have still been tested until it reaches the final version for regular users. According to the website BleepingComputer, these changes will likely reach the stable version of Windows when Windows 10 Sun Valley is released, which is expected to debut later this year, between September and December.
